A Selection of Original American Theatre Window Cards
American film advertising and promotional material, in particular window cards, were especially designed to be displayed in various prime locations outside of the actual American cinema or theatre in which the particular film was being shown. Because of this, window cards were printed on much smaller and heavier card than the usual half-sheet, one-sheet or quad cinema posters. The cards were placed in the windows of shops or businesses in or around the local area to advertise the film being shown at the time. Since they were used in such large numbers, the cinemas would buy them in large quantities. Because so many window cards were required, they were printed using a cheaper process, so most cards lacked the colour, detail, definition and impact of other sizes of film art. This is especially true of window cards produced by smaller independent printers local to one specific theatre or cinema in the area.
The artwork on some window cards released by film studios was sometimes considerably different from the usual bigger posters. Window cards were usually printed in colour with a top blank space of approximately four to six inches which was used for the cinema to write in the date and times that the film advertised was to be shown. At other times the cinema or theatre would simply print their own name.
Window cards, in particular those issued by major film studios such as Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Paramount or Twentieth Century Fox are the most popular among collectors because of their size and suitability to frame, and usually because they are cheaper to buy than most other posters of the same time period, in particular the linen-backed half-sheet or full-sheet posters. Even independently produced window cards are of interest to collectors, as these might be the only opportunity to acquire differing artwork for that particular film.

'My Cousin Rachel' Twentieth Century Fox Studios, 1953
A visually stunning, and original, 1953 American cinema window card which was used to promote the Twentieth Century Fox dark melodrama, 'My Cousin Rachel', which starred Richard Burton as Philip Ashley and Olivia de Havilland in the title role.
The film was directed by Henry Koster and produced by Nunnally Johnson, who also wrote the screenplay which was itself based on the best selling original novel written by the English novelist and playwright, Daphne du Maurier.
The American premiere of the Twentieth Century Fox production of 'My Cousin Rachel' took place in New York on the Christmas Eve of 1952.
The beautiful artwork created for this stunning window card captures perfectly the intensity and mood of this classic 1950's melodrama.
'My Cousin Rachel' was to be Richard Burton's first film in Hollywood as well as being the first film for which he would win an award, namely a Golden Globe for 'Most Promising Newcomer of 1952'.
'My Cousin Rachel' would also be the first film for which Richard Burton would be nominated for a 'Best Actor' Academy Award.
Sadly, the American cinema in which 'My Cousin Rachel' was being shown and in which this magnificent window card was originally displayed is unknown, however, this copy is a perfectly preserved example of an exceedingly rare and collectable item.

'The Bramble Bush' Warner Brothers Studios, 1960
An original American window card dating from 1960 which was used to promote the Warner Brothers Studio production of the intense and controversial drama, 'The Bramble Bush'.
The film co-starred Angie Dickinson, Barbara Rush, James Dunn and Jack Carson.
'The Bramble Bush' was based on the best-selling novel by Charles Mergendahl and was aimed to rival the American A.B.C. Television series 'Peyton Place', a series which for those times tackled subjects not raised before on an American network television series.
Using artwork typically evocative of the era, this eye-catching window card creates a perfect image to promote this highly-charged film drama.
'The Bramble Bush' opened to the American cinema-going public on February the 24th,1960.
This 'Bramble Bush' window card was printed and produced by The National Screen Services of America, and was distributed by Warner Brothers Studios.

'The Robe' Twentieth Century Fox Studios, 1963
An original American window card for the 1963 re-release of the Biblical epic film adaption of 'The Robe', which had been originally released by Twentieth Century Fox a decade earlier in 1953.
With Richard Burton cast in the powerful role of the Roman officer Marcellus Gallio, the film also co-starred Jean Simmons, Dean Jagger, Michael Rennie and Victor Mature.
Twentieth Century Fox's production of 'The Robe' gave Richard Burton his second Academy Award nomination for 'Best Actor' in Hollywood.
This 1963 re-issue window card was published by Twentieth Century Fox and has a very different, simpler but nonetheless quite striking design from the original 1953 release version.
Again, the American cinema where this window card was once displayed is unknown due to the fact that the space above the main image where the name of the theatre would have been displayed has been removed, which sadly has also detracted from the window cards originality and value.

With Richard Burton in fine performance in the title role of Thomas Becket, the film co-starred Peter O' Toole as King Henry II, Pamela Brown, Martita Hunt and a fine cameo performance from Sir John Gielgud as the King of France.
Both Richard Burton and Peter O'Toole were nominated for 'Best Actor' Academy Awards in 1964 for their respective performances in the film.

'The Comedians' Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios, 1967
An original American window card used to promote the Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor dramatic film adaption of 'The Comedians', which was released in 1967.
Released by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, the film was directed by Peter Glenville and based on the original novel of the same name, written by Graham Greene in 1966.
Although supported by a magnificent cast, which included Sir Alec Guinness and Peter Ustinov, as well as also winning a Golden Globe Award, (For Lillian Gish, as 'Best Supporting Actress'), the film sadly failed to ignite at the Box Office, both in the U.K. and the United States.
The design for this window card, although very basic, is nonetheless very striking in it's simplicity.
'The Comedians' opened to American cinema audiences on October the 31st, 1967.
Sadly, the American cinema in which 'The Comedians' was being shown is unknown, however, as this window card is intact its originality is preserved and its value is greatly increased.

'My Cousin Rachel' Twentieth Century Fox Campaign Booklet, 1952
An exceptionally rare campaign booklet, published by Twentieth Century Fox solely for the British cinema market, focusing on the wealth of magnificent reviews Richard Burton received for his first Hollywood role in the 1952 film adaption of Daphne du Maurier's 'My Cousin Rachel'.
The booklet contains many glowing reviews from all the major national British newspapers of the time as well as Twentieth Century Fox studio portraits of Richard Burton and many still images from the film.
A typical example of the reviews included in this booklet was written by Ewart Hodgson of 'The News of the World', and reads;
"Such is his personality that before 'My Cousin Rachel' has been going half an hour you know you are in the presence of a great and glittering star. Such exciting occasions don't happen often. I suppose the last time was eight or nine years ago when Gregory Peck first straddled the screen with is personality, character and talent. In his first role Richard Burton is on the attack all the time. He seems to be breathing Welsh defiance over the whole story, the scenery sets and particularly Olivia de Havilland.
Looking back, nearly four years ago I predicted that Richard Burton would triumph. well, here he is with a contract calling for £30,000 a picture."

'Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf' Warner Brothers Pictures
American Press Release Leaflet,1966
An American press release leaflet promoting the 1966 ground-breaking Warner Brothers film, 'Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf'.
This small folded card contains cast and crew credits, including photographs of the four main cast members, Richard Burton, Elizabeth Taylor, George Segal and Sandy Dennis, as well as producer Ernest Lehman, director Mike Nichols and writer Edward Albee.
The reverse of the leaflet contains notes on the production of the film which read;
"Jack L. Warner, President of Warner Bros. Pictures, determined that Edward Albee's dramatic tour-de-force, 'Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?', should be brought to the motion picture screen with uncompromising care and responsibility.
"The play was undoubtedly a play for adults," Mr. Warner recently stated, "and we have gone ahead to make 'Virginia Woolf' a film for adults, because it has something important to say to adults. It has always been my opinion that movies should be as varied as possible. Some films are for the entire family and some specifically for adults. I don't believe a controversial, mature subject should be watered down so that it is palatable for children. When that is done, you get a picture that is not palatable for children or for anyone else. As responsible film-makers, we undertook to make 'Virginia Woolf' for the over-18 section of our audience."
This view guided all aspects of the production of 'Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?', from the time Mr. Warner purchased the screen rights through the presentation of the film in this theatre.
'Virginia Woolf' brings together a great assortment of talents; Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton, George Segal and Sandy Dennis in the four memorable roles; producer-writer Ernest Lehman, director Mike Nichols, cinematographer Haskell Wexler, composer-conductor Alex North, production designer Richard Sylbert, set decorator George James Hopkins, costume designer Irene Sharaff, and many others.
The film also claims several noteworthy 'firsts'. It signals the appearance of Miss Taylor in what she describes as her first true character role. It is the first motion picture to be directed by Mr. Nichols, distinguished stage director and whilom entertainer. It marks Mr. Lehman's debut as a film producer, following an enviable writing career, and the screen debut of Miss Dennis, acclaimed previously for her performances on the Broadway stage."

The event was in aid of The League of Friends of Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre based in Oxford and took place on Sunday the 15th of October, 1967 at the ABC Cinema located on George Street, Oxford.
Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor were in attendance at this prestigious 'black-tie' event and Richard Burton was to write about the Premiere in his diary, recounting on Friday the 20th, 1967;
"And so to Sunday evening and the opening of 'Faustus'. It rained like mad, as usual in that splendid climate, and there were lots of people outside the theatre in macs and under umbrellas who applauded etc. A nurse, it was a charity performance for the Nuffield Hospital, and therefore a nurse presented Elizabeth with a bouquet of flowers and if you please curtsied. Elizabeth and I were delighted.
The party afterwards was alright but exhausting - between us we must have met a thousand people. Incidentally when we entered the theatre we were greeted by a fanfare of trumpets, then silence as we took our seats and then another fanfare for the Duke and Duchess of Kent. I record that because it shows the idiocy of fame. Five years ago we'd have had a fanfare of raspberries. If we were lucky."

''Doctor Faustus', retold from Christopher Marlowe's play, written in the year fifteen hundred and eighty-eight, was produced in Technicolor by Richard Burton and Richard McWhorter, and directed by Professor Nevill Coghill and Richard Burton from a screenplay by Nevill Coghill. Richard Burton stars as Doctor Faustus and Elizabeth Taylor makes as guest appearance as Helen of Troy.
The role of Faustus is perhaps the most challenging of Burton's career, and the production of the film realises a life-long ambition. To bring the play to the screen, Burton, with a flair for the unusual, has developed an imaginative technique which is likely to make 'Doctor Faustus', in the technical an acting context, one of the most discussed films of the year.
The film of Christopher Marlowe's 'Doctor Faustus' was the outcome of a stage presentation in Oxford by Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor sixteen months ago. The picture was made in Rome, an the students who appeared on the stage went to Italy to make their first film.'
The reverse of the leaflet features a complete cast list as well as technical credits.

'Hal B. Wallis's production of 'Anne of the Thousand Days' for Universal Pictures recreates from the turbulent pages of history the dramatically moving events in the brief, tragic life of Anne Boleyn, second wife of Henry VIII and mother of Elizabeth I. Against the rich tapestry of Tudor times, Henry and Anne are revealed not only as King and Queen but also as human beings ruled by deep and often raw passions. Their scheming and intriguing brought about some of the most fundamental and far-reaching changes of the very fabric of England and sowed the seeds of Britain's future-greatness. Richard Burton plays Henry VIII and Genevieve Bujold is the ill-fated Anne Boleyn who reigned for One Thousand Days.'

Complete U.K. Lobby Card Set, 1970
A beautiful collection of the original complete eight lobby card set used to promote the 1970 Universal Pictures release of 'Anne of the Thousand Days'. This pristine set is extra special as it was bought at auction, as a single lot, from the famous Derek and Pat East collection of film memorabilia.
Derek East was born in 1939 and was educated in Milford Haven, Pembrokeshire. After two years of National Service with the R.A.F. he trained as a maths teacher, working initially in Birmingham before moving to Hampshire where he taught in Basingstoke until he retired. Derek East was an avid film fan and collector of film memorabilia from an early age and grew up in a small town where it was then possible to see six different films a week. His passion for films continued into adult life and was shared for a while with his then girlfriend Pat, who sadly died unexpectedly, just as the hobby had started to become a working business. In memory of Pat, Derek immersed himself in the study of film and collecting, recruiting his brother Alex to mind his various stalls. More enthusiastic about buying than selling, Derek loved to chat and offered a complete range of film-related posters, portraits, stills, magazines, books and records. From the early 1990's his main outlet was a Saturday stall at the Electric Ballroom in Camden, and from there he moved to the much grander location of Westminster Central Hall where he drew in clients from mainland Europe. In 1999 he left Basingstoke and moved back to Pembrokeshire where the logistics of driving to London became untenable and he wound his business up soon after. Diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease in 2007 he died from the illness on 1st October 2011, leaving the huge stock of mostly folded British quad posters, lobby cards and film memorabilia to be sold at auction. These 'Anne Of The Thousand Days' lobby cards were a part of the Derek East collection and are now proudly held in the Richard Burton Museum collection.
Each card has been clearly marked with the 'Derek and Pat East Collection' stamp on the reverse.

'The Wild Geese' Rank Films One-Sheet Film Poster, 1978
A stunning, original British 'One-Sheet' film poster for the Andrew V. McLaglen film production of 'The Wild Geese'.
This beautifully designed poster, with absolutely incredible artwork featuring the four main stars of the film, was issued by Rank Film Distributors Limited and was printed by W. E. Berry, (Printers), Limited, based in Bradford, in 1978.
W. E. Berry Limited was a significant producer and printer of film posters based in Bradford. The company was set up in 1888 at 13 Currer Street, Bradford, by William Berry. Berry's son William Edward Berry (W. E. Berry) took over in the early 1900's. After a split from his father's business partner, William Edward Berry set up his own business as W. E. Berry Limited.
During the 1920s, W. E. Berry was introduced to Fred Martin at Paramount Pictures and the pair started a business relationship that cemented W. E. Berry's position as one of the leading producers and distributors of film posters.
Notable posters from the company's early period of production were for railway companies and for the Bertram Mills Circus. Once the landscape 'one-sheet', or 'quad' was established as the standard British size for film posters, W. E. Berry was one of a handful of printers with sizeable market power in this business. The company printed most of Rank Film's overseas posters and had major contracts for Disney and Colombia.
Some of the films W. E. Berry Limited produced posters for included The Ten Commandments (1923), Oliver Twist (1948), Carry on up the Khyber (1968), The Way of the Dragon (1972), and Star Wars (1977).
By the late 1990's, W. E. Berry Limited was a flourishing business employing around 140 people. However, financial losses in 2000 and 2003 put the company under substantial strain and the company went into administration and sadly closed in 2004.

The synopsis of Tony Palmer's production, as contained in this leaflet reads;
"Coinciding with the centenary of Richard Wagner's death, 'Wagner' the film, starring Richard Burton, is one of the most exciting independent productions ever attempted.
Conceived by director Tony Palmer and made with the full co-operation of the composer's grandson, Wolfgang Wagner, it incorporates much new information about the composer's life, in particular his relationship with Minna, his first wife, and with Nietzsche.
Richard Burton, in what many will consider to be his most important screen role for some years, portrays Richard Wagner from the period when he was Royal Kapellmeister, deeply involved with political and revolutionary activity, to his death in Venice nearly fifty years later.
The film itself is of epic proportions. Visually stunning with over two hundred separate European locations, it runs to a total length of nine hours and has brought together some of the most sought after talents in contemporary film.
The script is by prizewinning screenwriter Charles Wood and the music is conducted by Sir Georg Solti, probably the greatest interpreter of Wagner's music today. The director of photography is double Academy Award winner Vitorio Storaro and the costumes, over two thousand of them, are by British Academy Award winner Shirley Russell.
Gemma Craven plays Wagner's first wife Minna and Vanessa Redgrave portrays the formidable Cosima Wagner. The stunningly impressive cast list also includes Arthur Lowe, Ronald Pickup, Ekkehardt Schall, Marthe Keller, Lisa Kreuzer, Liza Goddard, Franco Nero, Cyril Cusack, Andrew Cruickshank and acting together for the first time on screen are Britain's three theatrical knights, Sir Laurence Olivier, Sir Ralph Richardson and Sir John Gielgud.
'Wagner' has been made available by London Trust Cultural Productions Limited to benefit the extremely worthy charities - The Royal College of Music Centenary Appeal and the Royal Opera House Development Appeal in conjunction with The Park Lane Group."
